Michael Kemp

Managing Director

Michael Kemp’s dedication and drive has lead to the formation of a law firm with a focus on ensuring Kemp Law’s client’s needs are put first and foremost.

That drive lead to him being admitted to the High Court in 2001 at the tender age of 24, with a career that stemmed into co-partnering a firm that he helped drive to great success, before then becoming the youngest lawyer in Brisbane to become the director of his own firm at the age of 33. Michael’s tenacity, foresight, work ethic and general demeanour ensures you will be managed correctly and your claim will be handled proficiently.

His focus on providing his clients the highest quality of care and attention have lead to Kemp Law’s ongoing growth and success, culminating in him being nominated as a Business News Australia Entrepreneur Of The Year Nominee 2016, as well as being included on the Business News Australia 40 Under 40: Top Young Entrepreneurs Brisbane 2016 list.

James Lah


Prior to entering law, James was a dental practitioner at Queensland Health.  During his tenure, he treated children’s oral health problems at the emergency department and oversaw multiple community health promotions.  Over the years, he also developed a passion for tackling public health issues and obtained Master of Public Health (UQ, 2006) to help the disadvantage groups in the society.

James’ passion to help the people in need eventually led him to the field of law.  James completed a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Queensland and was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.   During his time studying law, he maintained a close relationship with visiting Korean Judges and Prosecutors where he assisted their meetings with various Judges from the Supreme Court and District Court of Queensland.

As a partner at Kemp Law, James has excelled in establishing rapport with his clients, as well as in all levels of our business management.  He has also successfully implemented strategies that will achieve the best client focused outcomes.


Sunny Shin

Senior Associate

Sunny graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce (Dual Program) in 2012, after which, she was then admitted as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of South Australia in 2014.

As a first generation immigrant to Australia, Sunny is passionate about helping the most disadvantaged and vulnerable people in society. She understands that the legal process can be very difficult at times, particularly for a person who speaks english as a second language.

Sunny regularly volunteers to help refugee families, and she has also recently visited Tonga to help the communities in need as a leader of her church group.

Since becoming a solicitor, Sunny has enjoyed opportunities to work in many different areas of law, in all of which she focused on helping those in need, leading to her becoming a valued member of Kemp Law. Sunny is now considered to be one of the leaders in representing Kemp Law’s international clients, where she continues protecting people’s rights and responsibilities through her skills, knowledge and compassion for others.


Jonathan McDonald

Senior Associate

After completing high school in Brisbane, Jonathan took up an opportunity to travel overseas and take in the experience of other cultures. Upon returning to Brisbane, he undertook study at QUT a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and was admitted as a solicitor in 2002.

After completing university, he undertook Articles of Clerkship at a boutique plaintiff law firm where his passion for assisting clients was born. Once he’d completed his clerkship, he decided to broaden his knowledge and worked for a large insurer in the management of WorkCover claims, but while there, realised that he wanted to get back to focusing his efforts on ensuring the best possible outcomes for people in their time of need.

From 2011 through to 2016 Jonathan worked for a nationally operating law firm, where he managed a number of branches in and around Brisbane and developed extensive experience in multiple areas of law.

Having known Michael Kemp on a professional basis for a number of years, Jonathan was excited when an opportunity came to work at Kemp Law, looking forward to working for a firm that solely concentrates on getting the best outcome for clients and provide him the work life balance to spend time keeping active with sports, both his kids and his own.
